...And the week is over

The first week of 2010 is done... Time flies, yo. Anyways, this blog is my New Years gift to myself -slash- Resolution thingy. Yep, instead of doing something completely typical (Hence the Blog description, teehee), like loosing 30 pounds, or overcoming a drug addiction (Yes, drug addictions are typical) I've decided my New Years Resolution is to be more unique, creative, awesome, blah.
So... The first step to achieving this goal, is this: Reading 52 books in 52 weeks. Yes, I do read, for everyone that knows me and is thinking "What the hell? Kiana doesn't read!" I love reading and I have the extensive vocabulary to prove it!
Anyways, what I hope to gain from this challenge (blah, blah, blah) is to learn to read books slower. Because this challenge averages out to 1 book a week (Obviously...) I'll have to pace myself. I tend to get carried away with things like reading and such.

And with that, lets jump right into it!

The first book I read this year...

Was Cracked Up To Be. First, I shall give you the description, and then my thoughts on it, okay?
Perfect Parker Fadley isn’t so perfect anymore. She’s quit the cheerleading squad, she’s dumped her perfect boyfriend, and she’s failing school. Her parents are on a constant suicide watch and her counselors think she’s playing games…but what they don’t know, the real reason for this whole mess, isn’t something she can say out loud. It isn’t even something she can say to herself. A horrible thing has happened and it just might be her fault. If she can just remove herself from everybody--be totally alone--then everything will be okay...The problem is, nobody will let her.
So you might be thinking "That sounds depressing... Why would you want to read that?! I want to read about vampires... That sparkle!!" If so... Get out.
Right, so the review: I personally thought this book was a bit of a let down. Forgive me if I'm a bit negative, but I was totally expecting something far more devastating than what the "big secret" really was. At the end, I was thinking "I read 214 pages, and that's it? That's all? Really?"
On the plus side, I loved our main character/narrator's sense of humor. Parker is so cynical (Just as the title promises) its impossible not to find most of her thoughts at least, mildly amusing.
Throughout the entire book, Parker thinks she's got everyone eating out the palm of her hand. She wants to be alone, because she thinks she's done something oh so horrible, so she finds ways to replace herself. She hooks her ex up with one of her friends, thinking her ex won't bother her with "Parker, I still love you blah, blah, blah..." She even asks her parents for a dog, so that they'll be so caught up with the new pet that they'll leave her alone. Which is what she wants (or think she wants).
Overall, if I had to rate the book, I'd give it 3 stars. It was okay. A good, quick read. Not as grim as I'd hoped, but meh. It was very nicely written.
